The importance of solar shading and solar control this summer
Solar protection comes first, and active cooling systems, such as air conditioning, should only be used when necessary.
With the arrival of the summer solstice on 21 June, solar protection is a fundamental tool for improving comfort, reducing energy consumption and creating buildings that are resilient to climate change.
As heatwaves become more frequent and intense around the world, the number of air conditioning units in Europe is expected to rise to 275 million by 2050, according to a study by the International Energy Agency.
The additional energy required for indoor cooling results in increased CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere. At a time of rising energy prices, it also leads to higher costs for households, businesses and organisations.
But there is another solution. Solar shading is a sustainable measure that helps reduce, or even eliminate, the need for active cooling measures, helping us stay comfortable during the summer heat.

Anders Hall, President of the European Solar Shading Organisation, which coordinates GSD, said:
"Record-breaking summer temperatures and longer periods of drought, with days exceeding 35°C, are becoming increasingly common. Regions such as Southern Europe are facing critical levels of heat stress. Solar shading, and above all external solar shading, prevents the sun's heat from entering our homes, workplaces and public spaces during the summer months.
This means we can reduce the need for air conditioning and save energy. It means we can feel cooler, healthier and happier throughout the summer months."
